BlackMagic Thunderbolt enabled UltraStudio 3D

I didn’t know what to make of this when I first saw it online – was it a recorder or a conversion box?  It turns out it was neither, but rather a nifty little tool to send dual link 3D data streams into your computer or Raid box using – wait for it –  a laptop.

It looks like you might find some media slots for recording on it, but no it’s a breakout box for computer/raid input.

In case you were wondering how the Thunderbolt speeds compared to ESata, Firewire 800 or even the new USB 3.0, hold your breath and take a look at this:

Scarey fast!

Right now you’d have to use a new Macbook Pro with a Thunderbolt input connected to a Thunderbolt equipped raid array like the Promise Pegasus disk array – connected a bit backwards from UltraStudio 3D to Promise raid array then out it’s Thunderbolt connector to the Macbook Pro Thunderbolt input.  Once everything is connected you get these outrageous speeds and uncompressed recordings as well as the ability through the Macbook Pro to color correct on the fly with Color or another grading program.

All in all pretty slick.  The future is arriving and it’s really fast!
